Using British Council for Teens to Teach Language Features in Descriptive Text

Abstract


The integration of digital learning platforms has become increasingly important in English language teaching, particularly in teaching language features in descriptive texts. However, the use of authentic web-based resources for junior high school students remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the British Council for Teens website on teaching language features in descriptive texts and determine its effect size. A quantitative pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants were 32 seventh-grade students of SMPN 1 Bengkayang selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a 30-item rational cloze test and analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, paired-sample t-test, and Cohen’s d. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ scores, with a very large effect size (d = 2.18). Therefore, the British Council for Teens website effectively enhances students’ mastery of language features in descriptive texts.
