Abstract

This study highlights the importance of understanding implicit meaning in religious discourse, particularly in revealing how politeness is constructed through language use. While previous studies on Qur’anic pragmatics have explored implicature, limited attention has been given to Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI) in specific surahs and its relation to off-record strategies. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how PCI is realized through off record and how it contributes to politeness in the dialogue of Surah Maryam. Grounded in the theories of Paul Grice and Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson, this research employs qualitative content analysis, the data were taken from the English translation of Surah Maryam by Sahih International. The findings reveal that PCI dominates the dialogue and is realized through various off-record strategies, enabling indirect, context-dependent, and polite communication. It is concluded that PCI functions as a key mechanism in maintaining politeness and conveying meaning implicitly in Qur’anic dialogue
