Developing Yoodli AI Speaking Assessments for Sustainable Tourism Students
Abstract
This study developed and evaluated an AI-integrated speaking assessment using the Yoodli platform, focusing on sustainable tourism for vocational students in Medan. Employing the Borg and Gall Research and Development (R&D) model, the study involved needs analysis, product development, and feasibility evaluation with two English teachers and 60 students at SMK Negeri 1 Medan using interviews and questionnaires. Initial findings revealed students struggled with vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, and confidence due to nervousness. Meanwhile, teachers faced challenges in speaking assessments, including time constraints, subjectivity, and limited feedback, highlighting the need for a more efficient system. Consequently, an AI-integrated assessment featuring sustainable tourism tasks was developed. Results demonstrated strong validity, high usability, and positive student feedback. The Yoodli platform provided immediate, structured feedback, fostering independent learning. The study concludes that this AI-integrated assessment is highly effective and feasible for enhancing students’ communicative competence and professional readiness in the vocational tourism sector.
